Sunscreen is non-negotiable.
Slathering goopy grease all over your arms isn’t either.
We’ve preached this before. You need it on your face. You need it on your body. But no one wants to look like a walking candlewick. The good news is the industry has wised up. New formulas exist. They shield you from UV damage. They don’t leave you white-as-a-ghost.
Here is the deal with body sunscreen in 2026. Most won’t break the bank. Many feel like skincare. Our team, plus a few skeptical dermatologists and anonymous testers, went through the pile. We wanted spray. We wanted cream. We wanted cheap.
What matters (and what doesn’t)
Browse all you want. The shelves are full of noise.
Ignore it. Focus on this.
Broad-spectrum protection.
This means both UVA and UVB.
UVA ages you. UVB burns you. You need to block both.
Dr. Vivian Chin gets on it. “Minimum SPF 30.” That’s the word from the American Academy of Dermatology too.
SPF 30 blocks 97 percent.
SPF 50? It’s marginal. Dr. Chin says SPF 50 blocks about the same percent, just slightly more. The math gets boring past SPF 50.
“I highly recommend minimum SPF 30 because that covers 97% of UVB rays.” — Dr. Vivian Chin
Type.
Two camps. Mineral or Chemical.
Sensitive skin? Stick to mineral.
Zinc oxide. Titanium dioxide. They sit on top. They reflect light. They don’t wait around to activate. Immediate effect. Less irritation.
Chemical absorbs the rays. Good for many. Not always great for the itchy folks.
Water resistance.
Stop calling it “waterproof.” Nothing is waterproof.
Sunscreen isn’t sweatproof either.
Labels will say 40 minutes or 80 minutes water-resistant.
That’s all you get. If you’re in a pool, check the timer. Or just reapply. Nobody’s perfect.
The big lie: SPF 100
Do you want SPF 100?
Probably not.
Dr. Sonia Batra calls it out. People think SPF 100 is twice as good as SPF 50.
It’s not.
SPF 30 = 97% blocked.
SPF 100 = 99% blocked.
Two percent. That’s the gap.
Does that small jump mean you stay safe twice as long? No. It gives you a false sense of security. You stand there. You sweat. You think you’re shielded. Meanwhile UVA rays sneak in and damage the skin.
Stick to SPF 50 max. It’s enough.
How we tested
Brigitt Earley and the Women’s Health editors did the work.
We bought the bestsellers. We wore them.
We checked ingredients. We checked SPF labels.
Then we called the experts.
We asked six dermatologists. Dr. Annabelle Garcia. Dr. Serena Mraz. Dr. Thomas Griffin. Dr. Rahi Sarbaziha. Dr. Joshua Zeichner. And Dr. Batra again.
Real people tested too. Anonymous volunteers. No bias. Just sweat and sun exposure.
The results are in.
We sorted them.
Best Overall.
Best Mineral Spray.
Best Mineral Cream.
Best Drugstore.
Best Chemical.
(Yes. All those categories were mentioned. You know who you are if you were reading the original list).
The science doesn’t change. The texture does.
Find what you like to feel on your skin. That’s when you’ll actually use it.
That’s the trick. Not the highest SPF. Not the fancy pump.
Just putting it on.
Again and again.
Will you?
